Therapy

What you can expect from therapy

It is hard to define a talking therapy as it is different for everyone, and relies on a good, trusting relationship to help it work. The beauty of a talking therapy is that it provides a safe place with a safe person to talk through difficult issues, and even if we have people in our lives that care about us we can often feel like we don’t want to burden them. What you can expect from working with me is to be treated with respect, compassion and honesty.

I have found that every person’s experience is unique and will be looking to tailor therapy to your requirements.

We start with an assessment, where I listen to your needs and offer appropriate support. We then agree on a course of therapy with regular check ins to see how we’re doing, and ultimately aim to help you move forward.

People come with a variety of life struggles  and these are some I have experience in:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Grief, Bereavement and Loss

  • Relationship issues

  • Overwhelm and Burnout

  • Work-related Stress

  • Adjustment struggles

  • Anger problems

  • Self-compassion

As a Counselling Psychologist I have received training and accumulated experience in a range of therapeutic styles and approaches (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT, Psychoanalytic, Person-centred, Solution focused, mindful refocusing, Compassion Focused Therapy. I have further trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Research has demonstrated its benefits in treating psychological trauma arising from experiences as diverse as childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disaster, war-related experiences, assault, surgical trauma, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents. EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues, including phobias and OCD.

As well as therapeutic techniques and approaches Counselling Psychologists keep up to date with relevant research in the mental health area (such as neuroscience) which can be helpful to therapy sessions.
