What you can expect from therapy

It is hard to define a talking therapy as it is different for everyone, and relies on a good, trusting relationship to help it work. The beauty of a talking therapy is that it provides a safe place with a safe person to talk through difficult issues, and even if we have people in our lives that care about us we can often feel like we don’t want to burden them. What you can expect from working with me is to be treated with respect, compassion and honesty.

I have found that every person’s experience is unique and will be looking to tailor therapy to your requirements.

We start with an assessment, where I listen to your needs and offer appropriate support. We then agree on a course of therapy with regular check ins to see how we’re doing, and ultimately aim to help you move forward.

People come with a variety of life struggles  and these are some I have experience in:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Grief, Bereavement and Loss

  • Relationship issues

  • Overwhelm and Burnout

  • Work-related Stress

  • Adjustment struggles

  • Anger problems

  • Self-compassion

As a Counselling Psychologist I have received training and accumulated experience in a range of therapeutic styles and approaches (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT, Psychoanalytic, Person-centred, Solution focused, mindful refocusing, Compassion Focused Therapy. I have further trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Research has demonstrated its benefits in treating psychological trauma arising from experiences as diverse as childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disaster, war-related experiences, assault, surgical trauma, road traffic accidents and workplace accidents. EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues, including phobias and OCD.

As well as therapeutic techniques and approaches Counselling Psychologists keep up to date with relevant research in the mental health area (such as neuroscience) which can be helpful to therapy sessions.

Initial Session

I offer an initial 10-15 minute chat by telephone or Zoom to see if I am right for you and if online therapy is suitable for your needs. You can then decide in your own time if you would like to proceed and let me know via telephone or email.

Once we have agreed to work together we can agree a time and method for our first session. This is called the Assessment session and is where we explore more fully your counselling and psychotherapy needs. Ideally this would take place via video or telephone.

Before this session you will be sent the counselling contract to agree and sign and also given payment details for the session. I will also require some basic information including contact details and some other details about your background. Some of the factual contact information will be required to be completed and sent prior to the session but the open questions can be discussed together at the session.

All paperwork is sent via email and in a password protected document.

At the assessment session we can agree a plan and potential number of sessions. Please be assured that we review sessions with you on a regular basis and you are not tied into a set number of sessions.
